“False nails ruined my own nails” - A Common Misconception Often it has been said that having “false” nails (enhancements), ruins your own nails, but this should not be the case at all.
If you have weak, brittle or flaky nails before you have enhancements applied, then having enhancements will not make your problem any worse ….or indeed any better. We are all predisposed to a certain nail type, and this is genetics I am afraid.
There are things we can do to help or hinder our natural nail type. Taking regular care of your nails, drinking plenty of water, and generally following a healthy balanced diet, all contribute to improving the health of your nails. When you think about it, that is common sense really.
The main reason some people can be heard saying that having a set of extensions ruined their nails is because when they are removed, the nail underneath has been significantly damaged. However, if you have professional nail enhancements applied, and maintained in line with the treatment advice you are given, then your nails underneath will be completely unaffected.
Some of the reasons people are left with damage are:
• Nail drills (or electronic files) have been used on the natural nail causing nail plate damage • Harsh abrasive action has been used to apply or remove nails • Inferior products / products containing MMA monomer liquid have been used • Unqualified technicians have applied the enhancements • Nails enhancements have not been professionally removed – it has been known for clients to sit and pick or bite off their enhancements, then blame the technician for damaged nails! • There has been trauma to the nail (some sort of force has been applied to the nail)
If enhancements are removed correctly and your nails rehydrated then they should be in tip top condition. Please see example of a set of nails after proper removal. No damage has occurred to the original nail. In this example the enhancements had been on continually with regular maintenance for 4 months, the natural nail had grown underneath during this time, with absolutely no damage.
Also people claim their nails “feel” weaker when enhancements are removed. To explain this, you must remember that for however long you have been wearing nail enhancements, your own nails have in effect been wearing a coat of armour. Remember how strange or different it felt when they first went on? After a day or so, you forget what it was like without them. When you remove this “coat of armour” your own nail underneath is more sensitive to feeling. Suddenly things are coming into direct contact with the nail again, and not the protective coat you have been sporting. Compare it to walking around with a pair of jeans all winter, then suddenly wearing a pair of shorts and exposing your legs. Your legs would be sensitive to the cold, and you would feel things that perhaps you would not have noticed with your jeans on.
